NOTE: The state of Utah law requires a seller of a vehicle to provide, within 48 hours, a title of the sale. An excellent approach is to obtain a title at the time of purchase or delay payment for the vehicle until the seller can provide the title. This is because, without a negotiable title, you cannot register and title the vehicle in your name.

As a Buyer:

A negotiable title is a title that belongs to the vehicle to be purchased. You need to check the model, make and compare the VIN against the VIN on the vehicle. You have to also make sure the seller has appropriately signed off the title. Observe if the title is in more than one person’s name; if so, they all need to sign. For example, if the title uses “AND” as the conjunction, then you need to get both their signatures on the title. But if the title states “OR” in between their names, then just one of their signature is enough.

In a situation whereby the title is lost, the seller and the buyer can fill out this form. With this document appropriately completed, it can be used to register the vehicle in the buyer’s name.

You must also have a completed form, for the Odometer Disclosure Statement filled out and signed by the seller or owner of the vehicle and the buyer. Although, if the vehicle is ten years old or more, the Federal Odometer Disclosure Statement is not required.
